Global Talent Scheme Pilot Program
Starting from the 1 July 2018, all businesses will be able to sponsor highly skilled and specialised workers who will help contribute to the growth of their businesses and create more jobs in the long run. Highly skilled workers from around the world will have a new visa pathway into Australia as part of the Government’s new Global Talent Scheme (GTS) pilot program. The scheme includes two streams – one for established businesses and one for start-ups.
Established Business stream allows employers who are accredited sponsors to employ highly-skilled individuals with cutting-edge skills to contribute to innovation in established businesses and utilising their specialised skills to help enhance the Australian businesses and its employers.
Startup stream allows employers to sponsor highly-skilled individuals with cutting-edge skills to contribute to Australia's developing startup ecosystem. They hope that the individual will establish and create new ideas, new jobs, new skills and new technology for Australia. This stream is for startups businesses operating in a technology based or STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) related field. Startups must be endorsed by
The pilot will run for 12 months and provide businesses with a streamlined process to sponsor overseas workers with cutting edge skills, where there are no suitable Australians available to fill for the vacancies.
All businesses sponsoring workers to Australia under the scheme will need to demonstrate that they have been unable to source suitable individuals in the Australian labour market. Workers sponsored under the scheme will have access to a Temporary Skills Shortage visa and permanent residence after three years.
The GTS is designed to benefit Australia and Australian workers.
It is for bringing globally mobile, highly-skilled and experienced staff to Australia, who can act as 'job multipliers' in Australian businesses, helping them to hire more local staff and fill critical areas of need.
Any position filled through a GTS agreement must provide opportunities for Australians. These opportunities include the:
creation of new jobs for Australians
transfer of skills and knowledge to Australian workers.
An employer must demonstrate how these opportunities are being realised throughout the life of any GTS agreement.
