Please Note:

TOEFL (paper based) results are no longer accepted (from 6 June 2018) for Student Visa applications. However, the removal of TOEFL is still in its transitional arrangements.

Despite the change, TOEFL-PBT results will be accepted for Subclass 500 applicants who:

  • completed the test before 14 October 2017, and achieved the required score, in either the,

    • 2 years immediately before the date of lodging the Subclass 500 visa, if evidence of the test is provided at the time of application, or

    • 2 years immediately before the visa decision is made, if evidence of the test is not provided at the time of application.

OR

  • completed the test on or after 14 October 2017, but before 6 June 2018 and achieved the required score, either

    • 2 years immediately before the date of lodging the Subclass 500 visa, if evidence of the test is provided at the time of application, or

    • 2 years immediately before the visa decision is made, if evidence of the test is not provided at the time of application, and

    • if requested, gives additional evidence of the applicant's English language proficiency as specified in the Minister's request.

For these results to be acceptable, it must not have been taken more than 2 years before you apply for your student visa.

IELTS, TOEFL (internet based), CAE, PTE and OET are the 5 English Tests that are still being accepted by the Australian Government.

Exemptions to the English Test Score Requirement

In some exceptional circumstances, you might be exempt from providing your English Test Score. Some circumstances include:

  • You have completed at least 5 years' study in one or more of the following countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.

  • You are a citizen and hold a passport from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland.

  • You are enrolled in full-time school studies as a principal course including in a secondary exchange

programmed, a postgraduate research course, a standalone English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS), and Foreign Affairs or Defence sponsored students.

  • You completed, in Australia and in the English language, either the Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or a substantial component of a course leading to a qualification from the Australian Qualifications Framework at the Certificate IV or higher level, while you held a student visa in the 2 years before applying for your student visa.

It may sound very confusing and may or may not even apply to you. That is why you should consult a registered migration agent before applying for an Australian visa.
